VOLUNTEERS

Laguna Beach Unified School District recognizes and appreciates volunteer assistance in schools.  Volunteers can significantly enrich the educational program and strengthen a school’s relationship with the community.

The District encourages parents/guardians and other members of the community to share their time, knowledge and abilities with students. The Board, in compliance with California Education Code 35021 and Board Policy 1240, requires school volunteers to be screened and authorized to volunteer.

Volunteers who may be in contact with students outside the presence of certificated staff, however briefly, are called Tier II Volunteers, and must obtain California Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint submission prior to volunteering. Also, volunteers who will have frequent or prolonged contact with students provide evidence they are free from tuberculosis (TB). These requirements are in place given an abundance of caution for student safety and well-being.

Once cleared, Tier II volunteers do not need to go through the process again as long as their child and siblings are continuously enrolled in LBUSD.

To make the process of becoming a Tier II volunteer more convenient, the district is providing several opportunities for parents to receive Live Scan Fingerprint clearance at a district location, at no cost.  Parents may participating in Live Scan fingerprinting on any date or at any location, regardless of where their children attend.  Walk-ins are accepted on all dates, however since appointments are given priority, there may be a wait.

TIER I VOLUNTEERS

LBUSD will begin using the Raptor visitor management system in all district schools for all visitors, contractors and volunteers who work with a certificated staff member and volunteer fewer than five (5) hours per week, known as “Tier I volunteers.”

Upon entering the school office, visitors will be asked to present a valid state-issued ID (such as a driver’s license or ID card), which will be scanned into the Raptor system. Upon reading the information, Raptor will check the national database of registered sexual offenders. Please note that the Raptor system only scans the visitor’s name, date of birth, and photo for comparison with the national database of registered sex offenders. Additional visitor data from the identification cards is not gathered, nor is the system connected to any other database. Therefore, any other information connected to the visitor’s identification is not accessible to any of the users. Once entry is approved, Raptor will issue a badge within seconds, printed with the visitor’s name, photo, date, time, and destination or purpose for the visit.

TIER II VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers that perform volunteer service more than five (5) hours per week, chaperone field trips, or drive students, are considered “Tier II volunteers” and are required to receive Live Scan Fingerprint clearance through the FBI/DOJ prior to volunteering.  Also, volunteers who will have frequent or prolonged contact with students must demonstrate they are free from tuberculosis (TB). While we understand these requirements may be inconvenient, they are legally required for student safety and well-being.   Once an individual is approved as a Tier II volunteer, they do not need to go through the process again as long as their child and his/her siblings are continuously enrolled in LBUSD.

To make the process of becoming a Tier II volunteer more convenient, the district is providing several opportunities for parents to receive Live Scan Fingerprint clearance at a district location, at no cost.  Parents may participating in fingerprinting on any date or at any location, regardless of where their children attend.  Walk-ins are accepted on all dates, however since appointments are given priority, there may be a wait.
